Nació en China en el año 1987. En octubre del 2007 alcanzó los 2703 puntos de ELO FIDE, siendo el primer chino en la historia en superar los 2700, actualmente es el número 1 de su pais, ocupando la posición número 13 de las listas mundiales.

2.Teimour Radjabov
Nació en 1987 en Azerbaiyán, uno de los mejores de las nuevas generaciones, siendo gran maestro a los 14 años, participó en Linares en 4 ocasiones, sorprendió al ganar a Kasparov en una de rondas. Número 7 FIDE

3.Viswanathan Anand
Nació en la India en el año 1969, actual campeón del mundo, ha participado en este torneo en trece ocasiones consiguiendo el primer puesto en tres ocasiones enlos años 1998, 2007 y 2008. Actualmente vigente campeón del Mundo y número 2 FIDE

4.Lenier Domínguez
Nació en Cuba en el año 1983, número 1 de Cuba y latinoamerica, es considerado como el sucesor de Capablanca. Se caracteriza por su juego ofensivo y por no amilanarse ante sus rivales. Es su primera participación en Linares. Actualmente ocupa las posición nº 23 en las listas mundiales FIDE.

5.Magnus Carlsen
Nació en Noruega en 1990, niño prodigio del ajedrez, el GM mas joven, a los trece años, ha participado en Linares en el 2007 y 2008 quedando en segundo lugar en ambas ocasiones. Número 4 FIDE

6.Alexander Grischuk
Nació en 1983 en Rusia, jugador de gran creatividad y especialista en los ritmos rápidos, es uno de los más destacados jovenes talentos de los últimos años. Participó en Linares en el 2001. Número 14 FIDE

7.Vassily Ivanchuk
Nació en Ucrania en el año 1969, su estilo de juego imprevisible y original es una amenaza para cualquier oponente, ha participado en 14 ocasiones, ganando en tres de ellas en los años 1989-91-95. Número 3 FIDE

8.Levon Aronian
Nació en Armenia en el año 1982, Sus victorias en torneos sub- y juveniles asi como en Linares y Wijk aan Zee, asi como la medalla de oro con su pais en las últimas olimpiadas demuestran su valía, ha participado 3 veces en Linares ganando la primera de ellas, en el 2006. Número 11 FIDE

Acróstico - O Meu Tabuleiro de Xadrez

Desde o início do Projeto Xadrez na minha turma, o entusiasmo foi percebido de imediato.

O mais legal tem sido o contato, a participação e o interesse de cada aluno com este magnífico jogo, o qual estimula o raciocínio e tantos outros fatores que se somam ao desenvolvimento individual e coletivo.

Neste acróstico, intitulado "O Meu Tabuleiro de Xadrez", vê-se um conteúdo capaz de incentivar ainda mais a busca dos alunos pelo inteligente entretenimento com características didáticas, começando pela contribuição desta atividade com a aprendizagem.

Onde ou quando inventaram o Jogo de Xadrez não importa.

Mas dizem ter quase 3 mil anos a sua história,

Embora alguns atribuam a época mais recente.

Uma coisa, porém, é certa: trata-se de algo fascinante.

Todas as peças do jogo são colocadas sobre um tabuleiro e

Alinhadas uma a uma nas duas primeiras colunas e linhas.

Brancas e pretas as suas cores e cada lado tem um rei,

Uma rainha, oito peões, dois cavalos, dois bispos e duas torres.

Logo observar que a casa branca deve ficar à direita do jogador.

E esta é a primeira regra, ou seja, a posição do tabuleiro.

Instrutivo e inteligente ele pode ser definido como didático,

Razão de integrar o currículo de nossas Escolas, embora isto já

Ocorra há anos noutros países, sendo até matéria obrigatória.

Dá para dizer que o Jogo milenar é uma batalha travada

Xadrez, para muitos, representa uma distração, para outros

A prática da estratégia, pois requer muita concentração,

Dividindo os lances entre ataque e defesa. A imobilização do

Rei é o objetivo do jogo, vencendo aquele que conseguir isto.

E esta conquista tanto pode ser das brancas quanto das pretas.

Zelo e atenção em todos os movimentos facilitam a vitória.

Eu costumava jogar xadrez quando eu era uma criança. Hoje eu só lembrar as regras básicas, mas ainda gosto de ensaio xadrez jogos de computador, como Funny Xadrez, de tempos a tempos.

Isto é bastante simples xadrez um jogo, ou pelo menos não tão completa como outras xadrez simuladores que eu tenho visto até agora. O jogo apresenta um elegante, escuro interface (o que só pode ser visto em tela cheia) e é o passatempo perfeito para um curto intervalo de trabalho. Você pode escolher entre preto ou branco, e, aparentemente, jogar contra o computador ou contra um adversário humano no mesmo PC, mas devo dizer que eu não encontrar a maneira de começar um jogo de dois humanos.

Além dessas características básicas, a verdade é que Xadrez Engraçado não inclui qualquer outra coisa. Acho que este jogo irá agradar aqueles em busca de um casual xadrez jogo, mas não aqueles profissionais xadrez jogadores que precisam de mais funcionalidades avançadas.

There we have it. It all starts with money, and in this case the United States Chess Federation is very lucky to have a patron like Mr Sinquefield who makes it all possible. There's even a $64,000 bonus for any player who scores a 9-0 sweepin, in memory of late chess champion Bobby Fischer who won all of his 11 games in the 1963-64 U.S. championship, and a jackpot bonus for a "clear" first-place winner.

The Fischer Memorial Prize won't be awarded, that's already clear, since after three rounds no player is left with a 100% score. Kamsky, Nakamura, Shulman and Friedel are sharing the lead with 2.5/3 while two-times champ Boris Gulko is still waiting for his first (half) point. Raro computador de xadrez

Um raro computador de xadrez:

The Destiny Mini Master is virtually identical to the Destiny Prodigy. The only difference being the lack of the Prodigy lettering below the LED display and the different manual. The Mini Master was the version made for and sold in Germany, and it is difficult to find it anywhere else.

It is an interesting chess computer. Strong and well featured for an early 1980s peg sensory. It contains an improved Morphy program (Wiki Elo 1570). The other main thing that sets it apart is the ability to input moves either by moving the pieces or by keypad entry.

Both versions are reasonably rare. I sense that part of the reason for this is its unreliability. Connection between the keypad and PCB is via a "cable" in the form of a thin plastic sheet which is inclined to split.

Spanish designer Jaime Hayón will create a giant chess set in Trafalgar Square, London, as part of this September's London Design Festival. Update: Hayón has sent us many new drawings, renderings and research materials, which we've added below.

The installation, announced today at the festival's press launch, is billed as "a design reinterpretation of the Battle of Trafalgar".

LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR 2009

The London Design Festival today announced its plans for the seventh Festival, running 19–27 September, with an array of innovative and creative events, installations and exhibitions taking place all over London. Speaking at the Press Conference held at the V&A Museum, Ben Evans, Festival Director outlined some of the major highlights of the Festival.

The Battle of Trafalgar

At the centre of the Festival will be a gigantic chess board in Trafalgar Square. Spanish designer Jaime Hayón has designed thirty-two ceramic chess pieces, each up to 2m tall that will be located in the centre of Trafalgar Square.

The installation - supported by Arts Council England and the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade - will be interactive, inviting the public to stage giant-scale chess matches; a design reinterpretation of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The V&A

This year, for the first time, the London Design Festival will take up residence within the V&A, one of the world's greatest museums of art and design, signalling the start of a closer on-going relationship. The museum has set aside the newly opened Sackler Centre and other areas of the museum for Festival events, shows, talks and installations.

Highlights include:

The Wallpaper* Chair Arch - a dramatic outdoor installation reviving a great Victorian tradition. In honour of Britain's creative industries Wallpaper* is commissioning a contemporary arch from one of the city's most prominent and exciting young designers. A specially commissioned installation in the Tunnel Entrance to the V&A commissioned by Arts Co created from reclaimed waste.

'In Praise of Shadows' – an exhibition organised by EUNIC (the network of European Cultural Centres) with the support of the European Commission to mark the advent of the EU directive to phase out low-efficiency light bulbs by 2012. The project - curated by Jane Withers - is opportunity to challenge the way we think about light, allowing visitors to enjoy a choreography of light in darkened galleries.

A unique poster exhibition curated by Domenic Lippa, Partner at Pentagram Design, featuring the work of 25 leading graphic designers.
Design tours within the V&A, led by a small number of key London designers pointing out collections or objects with special significance.
A major party to celebrate The London Design Festival 2009 within the V&A, 24 September.

Size + Matter at Southbank Centre

Now in its third year the Size + Matter project goes from strength to strength in 2009 – with Shiguru Ban and another leading designer commissioned to use materials to create a temporary piece of public design. The installations will be on show outside Southbank Centre, Phillips De Pury & Company will auction the pieces in the autumn. Past Size + Matter commissions include works by high profile designers Amanda Levete, Zaha Hadid and David Adjaye.

This year's Festival also promises a unique blend of up to 200 events and activities taking place in the capital. The varied programme will include international exhibitions, trade events, local showcases, installations, talks and seminars, product launches, receptions, private views and parties - all reflecting London's place at the heart of the international design community and its position as a world creative capital.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: 'There has never been a better time to support London's thriving creative industries and highlight the dynamic design that continues to boost our economy and attract investment to the capital. The London Design Festival helps promote our world-class innovative design and I encourage everyone to attend and experience London's creative brilliance.'

Bobby Fischer was born on March 9, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to Regina Wender and Gerhard Fischer. His father was a physicist and his mother was a riveter in a defense plant. She later became a grade school teacher, a registered nurse, and a physician. Bobby Fischer's parents divorced in 1945 and Regina had custody of Bobby and his older sister Joan. In 1948 they moved to Mobile, Arizona. A year later they moved to Brooklyn, New York.

In May 1949, Bobby and Joan learned how to play chess from instructions found in a chess set given to them as a present. Bobby saw his first chess book a month later. For over a year Bobby played chess on his own.

On November 14, 1950 his mother wrote to Herman Helms looking for chess opponents for Bobby.

On January 17, 1951 Bobby played a game against master Max Pavey who was giving a simultaneous exhibition. Bobby lost in 15 minutes. A few weeks later Bobby joined the Brooklyn Chess Club, headed by Carmine Nigro.

In 1952 Bobby played in his first chess tournament at the Nigro home, winning his match.

In 1953 Bobby was playing at the Brooklyn Central YMCA. In February 1953, Bobby played in his first organized tournament, the Brooklyn Chess Club championship, and tied for 3rd-5th place.

In 1954 Bobby was playing a lot of chess at the Brooklyn Chess Club and Brooklyn YMCA. He was exposed to international chess when he watched the USA-USSR chess match every day at the Hotel Roosevelt in Manhattan. In December, 1954 he again took 3rd-5th place at the Brooklyn Chess Club.

In 1955 Bobby score 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 in a Washington Square Park Swiss tournament. In May he scored 3 points in the U.S. Amateur Championship in Lake Mohegan, New York. He joined the Manhattan chess club in June, 1955 and soon won the class C championship and the class B championship. In July he won 2 games, drew 6 games, and lost 2 games at the U.S. Junior Championship in Lincoln, Nebraska. He took 3rd place in the U.S. Junior Speed Championship.

In January 1956, Bobby won the class B prize of the Greater New York City Open. He was a member of the New Jersey Log Cabin Chess Club. In March 1956, Bobby travelled with the Log Cabin Chess Club to Cuba and even gave a simultaneous exhibition at the Capablanca Chess Club. His U.S. Chess Federation rating was published at 1726. In April he won the class A championship at the Manhattan Chess Club. In May he played in the U.S. Amateur Championship in Ashbury Park, New Jersey, winning 3 games, drawing 2, and losing 1 game. At 13, he was the youngest player in the event. In June he joined the Hawthorne Chess Club, which was at the home of Jack Collins. In July he took first place at the U.S. Junior Championship in Philadelphia with 8 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. His USCF rating in the event was 1830. At 13 years and 4 months, he was the youngest player to win the U.S. Junior Championship. He won a typewriter for his efforts. A few weeks later he played in the 57th U.S. Open in Oklahoma City, winning 5 games, drawing 7 games and tied for 4th-8th place. In September he tied for 8th place at the Canadian Open in Montreal. In October he took 8th place in the Rosenwald tournament in New York. His win against David Byrne won the brilliancy prize and has been called the game of the century. In November he tied for 2nd-5th place in the Eastern States Open in Washington, D.C. In December Bobby won the rapid transit play at the Manhattan Chess Club and took 4th place in the Manhattan Chess Club Championship.

In March 1957, Bobby played two games against former world champion Max Euwe in New York, drawing one and losing one. In April he won the New York Metropolitan League. In July he tied for 6th place at the New Western Open in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A few days later he played in the U.S. Junior Championship in San Francisco and took first place and another typewriter. He also won the U.S. Junior Speed Championship. In August he tied for 1st-2nd at the 58th U.S. Open in Cleveland and won $750. His official USCF rating put him at 2231, making him the youngest player in the United States with a master's rating at that time, at age 14 years and 5 months. In September he won the New Jersey Open championship. In December he won the North Central Open in Milwaukee.

On January 10, 1958 Bobby Fischer at age 14 years and 9 months won the 1957/58 U.S. Championship and Zonal with 8 wins, 5 draws and no losses. His USCF rating climbed to 2626. Except for Santa Monica 1966, Bobby Fischer would win every U.S. tournament he played in. In May he appeared on the television show I'VE GOT A SECRET and stumped the panel (his secret was that he was U.S. chess champion). In August he took 5th-6th at the Portoroz Interzonal and gained the Grandmaster title. At the same time he became the world's youngest Candidate for the world championship at age 15 years, 6 months.

In January 1959, Bobby Fischer again won the U.S. Championship with 6 wins and 5 draws. He attended Erasmus High School in Brooklyn with Barbera (later changed to Barbra) Streisand and they were good friends. Bobby later dropped out of school to become a professional chess player. Fischer's academic records indicated an I.Q. of 180 with an incredibly retentive memory.

In April 1959 he took 3rd-4th at Mar del Plata, Argentina. In May he took 3rd-4th at Zurich, Switzerland behind Tal and Gligoric, with 8 wins, 5 draws, and 2 losses. In September he took 5th-6th at the Bled/Zagrev/Belgrade Candidates tournament, won by Mikhail Tal. Fischer's USCF rating was 2636, behind Reshevsky's 2693 rating.

In January 1960, Fischer again won the U.S. Championship with 7 wins, 4 draws, and no losses. In April he tied for 1st-2nd with Boris Spassky at Mar del Plata, Argentina. He did poorly in Buenos Aires in August, then took first place at Reykjavik, Iceland in October. In November he played board 1 for the United States at the Chess Olympiad in Leipzig, winning 10 games, drawing 6, and losing 2. His USCF rating was 2641.

In January 1961, Bobby again won the U.S. Championship with 7 wins, 4 draws, and no losses. In July he started a match with Sam Reshevsky and tied it with 2 wins, 7 draws, and 2 losses before negotiations broke down to continue the match over the playing schedule and time of the start of each game. In August Bobby gave a controversial interview with Ralph Ginzburg for HARPERS magazine. In October, he took 2nd at the Alekhine Memorial in Bled, Yugoslavia, behind Tal. Fischer led the USCF rating list with 2660.

In 1962 Bobby joined the Worldwide Church of God. In March he won the Interzonal in Stockholm with 13 wins, 9 draws, and no losses. This was the first interzonal that a Soviet player did not take first place. In May he took 4th place at the Curacao Candidates tournament, won by Petrosian. He later accused the Russians of cheating in this event and that interview was published in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. In October he played Board 1 for the United States at the Chess Olympiad in Varna, Germany and scored 8 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses. His USCF rating was 2687.

In January 1963, Bobby won the U.S. Championship with 6 wins, 4 draws, and 1 loss (to Edmar Mednis). He announced he was boycotting FIDE tournaments until the Russians stopped fixing chess. In July he won the Western Open in Bay City, Michigan. In September he won the New York State Open with a perfect score of 7 wins, no draws, no losses. In November he was to play 400 opponents at once in an exhibition, but was postponed because of President Kennedy's assasination and a fire at the Astor hotel where the event was to have taken place. His USCF rating was 2685.

On January 1, 1964, Bobby Fischer won the U.S. Championship with a perfect score of 11 wins. He than began a nationwide simultaneous exhibition for the rest of the year. The first international rating list was published by Arpad Elo in 1964. The top two players were Fischer and Petrosian at 2690. His USCF rating was 2734.

In August 1965, Bobby participated in the 4th Capablanca Memorial in Cuba by playing through a teletype machine at the Marshall Chess Club in New York. He tied for 2nd-4th with 12 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses. In December he won the U.S. Chess Championship with 8 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses. Fischer's USCF rating climbed to 2734.

In July 1966, Bobby took 2nd place at the Piatigorsky Cup in Santa Monica, behind Spassky. Over 1,000 people watched his game with Boris Spassky, the largest audience for a chess game in U.S. history. In November he played Board 1 for the U.S. at the 17th Chess Olympiad in Havana, scoring 14 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss. In December he won the U.S. Championship with 8 wins, 3 draws, and no losses. This was his 8th U.S. Championship title.

In April 1967, Fischer took 1st place at Monaco. In August he won at Skopje, Yugoslavia. In October he participated in the Sousse Interzonal, but withdrew after leading the event with 7 wins and 3 draws. His USCF rating was 2762.

In 1968 Bobby moved to Los Angeles and followed the Worldwide Church of God. In July he took 1st place at Netanya, Israel. In September he took 1st place at Vinkovci, Yugoslavia.

In 1969 Bobby finished his book, MY 60 MEMORABLE GAMES. He played Board 1 in a New York Metropolitan League and won.

In April 1970, he played Board 2 in the USSR vs REST OF THE WORLD match in Belgrade, beating Petrosian with 2 wins and 2 draws. He then went on to Herceg Novi, Yugoslavia and won the unofficial world 5-minute championship with 17 wins, 4 draws, and 1 loss. After the tournament he called off from memory all of the moves from his 22 games, involving over 1,000 moves. In May he took 1st at Rovinj/Zagreb. In August he took 1st place at Buenos Aires. In September he played Board 1 for the U.S. at the 19th Olympiad in Siegen, Switzerland. In November, Pal Benko gave up his spot at the Palma de Mallorca Interzonal so that Fischer could play. Bobby won the event with 15 wins, 7 draws, and 1 loss. Fischer won the chess oscar for 1970, 1971, and 1972.

In June 1971, Bobby Fischer defeated Mark Taimanov with 6 wins, no draws, no losses in the Candidates quarterfinals in Vancouver, Canada. In July he defeated Bent Larsen also with a perfect 6-0 score in the Candidates semi-final in Denver, Colorado. His performance rating was 3060. In August Bobby won the Manhattan Chess Club 5-minute blitz with 21 wins and 1 draw. In September, Bobby defeated Tigran Petrosian with 5 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss in Buenos Aires for the Candidates finals. He now became challenger for the world championship. His USCF rating was at its peak of 2825.

In January 1972 Bobby appeared on the Dick Cavett show and talked about chess. On July 11, 1972 he began his match with Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland for the world championship. On September 1, 1972 Bobby became world champion after winning 7 games, drawing 11 games, and losing 3 games (one on forfeit). Fischer received $160,00 for his efforts and another $40,000 in royalties. Bobby Fischer's last published USCF rating was 2810. His FIDE rating was 2785.

On April 3, 1975 Bobby Fischer forfeited his title as world chess champion to Anatoly Karpov without playing a single chess game since winning the world championship. Fischer had been living in an apartment in South Pasadena owned by the Worldwide Church of God since the world championship.

In 1977 Bobby played three games against the MIT Greenblatt computer program. He turned down $250,000 to play one chess game at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and $3 million to play in a tournament in the Philippines.

In 1978 Bobby Fischer filed a $3.2 million lawsuit against the publishers of a magazine critical of the Worldwide Church of God. He claimed the writers taped his conversations without his consent. He then accused the church of reneging on their promise to finance the lawsuit.

On May 26, 1981, Fischer was arrested in Pasadena under suspicion of a bank robber. He was stopped by a police officer who said he fit the description of a bank robber. Fischer refused to answer some questions as was arrested.

In 1982 Fischer published, "I WAS TORTURED IN THE PASADENA JAILHOUSE." He used the pseudonym Robert James.

In 1987 the House of Representatives passed House Resolution Bill 545 recognizing Bobby Fischer as the world chess champion.

In 1988 Bobby patented the Fischer digital chess clock wich adds 2 minutes per move.

On September 1, 1992, Bobby Fischer came out of his 20 year retirement and gave a press conference in Yugoslavia. He pulled out an order from the U.S. Treasury Department warning him that he would be violating U.N. sanctions if he played chess in Yugoslavia. He spit on the order and now faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if he returns to the U.S. In addition, he most forfeit his $3.65 million to the U.S. Treasury and forefeit 10% of any match royalties earned. On September 30, Bobby Fischer began his re-match with Boris Spassky in Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia. The match was organized by banker Jedzimir Vasiljevic. On November 11, Fischer won the match with 10 wins, 5 losses, and 15 draws. He received $3.65 million for his winnings and Spassky received $1.5 million. The match used the new Bobby Fischer chess clock.

In 1996 Bobby travelled to Argentina to promote his random chess, where you set up the pieces in a random manner. This would take away the book knowledge of regular chess.

The President of FIDE offered Fischer $100,000 and a piece of land in the Kalmyk Republic in redress for copyright violations by former Soviet publishers.

Adolph Karl Earnst Anderssen was born July 6th, 1818 _ in a small, sleepy village outside of then Breslau, Germany. (Today it is Wroclaw, Poland _ a predominantly Jewish community.) Showed the moves of the game at a very young age, (probably by his Father); his genius was not fully evident at first. His first teachers were Liebrecht and K.F. Schmidt, ("Chess Riddles"). Adolph Karl Earnst Anderssen was born July 6th, 1818 _ in a small, sleepy village outside of then Breslau, Germany. (Today it is Wroclaw, Poland _ a predominantly Jewish community.) Showed the moves of the game at a very young age, (probably by his Father); his genius was not fully evident at first. His first teachers were Liebrecht and K.F. Schmidt, ("Chess Riddles").

His family members were all well educated, so it is not surprising that he wound up as a teacher of Mathematics. (He also taught the German Language at Breslau's Frederichs Gymnasium, where he worked almost his entire life. The records indicate he was a kind and patient man, but capable of great clarity of thought.) And even though he was generally thorough in his studies, he also loved to visit Leipzig and Berlin on holidays, where he would immerse himself completely in chess. But he was also disciplined; he would not take a long break (from his studies - or his teaching duties), to play chess until he was almost 30 years old.

A little known fact about Anderssen is that he gained first fame as a composer of chess problems, publishing the book, Aufgaben fur Schachspieler in 1842. This book was full of short and lively little problems.

He played dozens of friendly, offhand games with players all over Germany and earned a reputation as an up and coming player while still in his teens. He also played many games, and even had correspondence with Bilguier, who later (1843?) wrote of the first scientific chess book, the landmark and epic publication, The Handbuch. (Still a great reference, even today!)

While he won many fine games and gained an excellent reputation as a player, it was generally thought he was not yet a player of the first rank. [Or so wrote the committee members of London, 1851. (The FIRST real, international chess tournament!) His only notable achievement up to that point had been winning a University event and a drawn match with Harritz in 1848.] But they were all wrong, because in London, 1851; he swept all before him - including the 'supposedly' superior Howard Staunton by the score of 4 to 1. He also decisively defeated Kieseritsky, Szen, and Wyvill in a series of knockout matches. Thus, some sources recognize Anderssen as the first (unofficial) World Chess Champion. He was 33 at this time.

Anne Sunnucks says he is generally regarded as the world's best player from the early to mid-1850's until 1866.

Because he was a teacher, he went long periods with little or no chess contact, especially with really good players. This often meant that when he returned to play he was rusty, he had to, "play himself back into form."
("Throughout his career, Anderssen was handicapped by both his age and by the lack of time for preparation." - Anne Sunnucks.)

I personally feel Anderssen was one of the greatest "pure" tactical chess geniuses who ever lived. (Tal was another.) His games (The 'Immortal Game' vs. Kieseritsky and the 'Evergreen Game' vs. Dufresne); are things of beauty of a grand design. They show a depth and scope that I feel games of an earlier period simply did not contain. Anderssen later lost matches to Morphy and Steinitz, but remained a very capable and dangerous player. (He had favorable LIFETIME scores against nearly everyone except for Morphy.) He convincingly won London, 1862; and Baden-Baden, 1870. (Baden-Baden, 1870; may have been one of the 'Ten Strongest and Best Tournaments' of the 19th Century!) He also came equal second with Zukertort, (Paulsen won); at Leipzig, 1877. This despite the fact he was considered past his prime, and near the end of his playing days. (He died two years later, - March 13th, 1879. His death is thought to be caused by a heart ailment, perhaps brought on by a childhood fever.)

In 1865, for a lifetime of teaching, AND his chess achievements, Breslau University conferred an honorary doctorate on Anderssen.

Anderssen's impact on modern chess cannot be underestimated. He helped push the frontiers of the time and left his very indelible impression on our fair past-time. A close study of his games will help any player improve, especially if he is looking to sharpen his tactics!!

Strongest player in the world between 1859 and 1866. When he died, his obituary was 19 pages long. In 1851 A. Anderssen was recognized as the srongest chess player in the world. That same year A. Anderson was recognized as the strongest checker player in the world. In 1877 a group of German chess fans organized a tournament to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Anderssen's learning the chess moves. This is the only tournament in chess history organized to commemorate a competitor. He tied for second, behind Paulsen.

A Fidelity Prestige

An unusual sight! Three Conchess Monarchs.
At the time the photograph was taken the furthest one was not working due to reed switch problems. I have now replaced reed switches in all three. Again one of these Monarchs has been sold.

A Simultaneous against three Auto Response Boards. Two with the Sargon 2.5 module and a GrandMaster Series with a 4.0 module. One of these boards has now been sold but I still have three ARBs.

Baseado em factos verídicos, A Máquina de Xadrez é tanto um romance histórico como um thriller empolgante. Os acontecimentos decorrem por volta de 1770, no século das Luzes, quando o barão Wolfgang von Kempelen, aventureiro e livre-pensador, tenta conquistar o favor da imperatriz austríaca Maria Teresa apresentando em Viena um engenhoso invento, um autómato vestido como um turco e pretensamente inteligente, capaz de derrotar os melhores jogadores de xadrez. De facto, no interior da máquina, um verdadeiro prodígio mecânico, esconde-se Tibor, o anão que Kempelen resgatou dos calabouços de Veneza, um exímio jogador de xadrez, que, relutante, se vê forçado a participar naquele embuste. Depressa o Turco se torna famoso por toda a Europa, até que, nas celebrações do casamento de Maria Antonieta e Luís XVI, uma baronesa é encontrada morta em misteriosas circunstâncias. As suspeitas recaem sobre o Turco, suscitando a perseguição eclesiástica e complexas intrigas palacianas. O autor tira partido das suas personagens criando um drama psicológico que se adensa à medida que a intriga se torna mais empolgante. A recriação do tempo histórico é minuciosa e brilhante e tem tudo para captar o interesse do leitor.

Tem tudo para captar o interesse do leitor... E, de facto, capta!

Já não me lembro da última vez que li um livro com este nível de complexidade! Tenho lido obras com excelentes personagens, mas nenhuma deste nível, tenho a certeza.

Este é um thriller histórico que se desenvolve também em função de um drama psicológico, pois as personagens são de facto de um nível de complexidade único. E, mais interessante que tudo isto, é que é baseado em factos verídicos, as personagens são verídicas! Nunca pensei que Kempelen tivesse existido, e é com extrema alegria que já pesquisei umas quantas páginas sobre ele e a sua famosa Máquina de Xadrez.
A sinopse explica muito. A história é, basicamente, a de uma máquina de xadrez, construída para agradar à Imperatriz, mas que representa várias coisas para cada personagem: para o anão, uma prisão; para o criador, o auge; para o ajudante, uma obrigação; para alguns, perigo e maldição. E portanto, o sucesso da máquina de xadrez depende de quem sabe o seu segredo. No entanto, não só a morte misteriosa da baronesa como a luta de cada personagem vai afectar o seu destino.

O que a sinopse não revela é mesmo a complexa teia que se vai desenvolvendo à volta das personagens, numa luta psicológica constante. Elas vêem-se obrigadas a confrontar obrigações com vontades, fé com razão. Esse é, na minha opinião, o grande triunfo do livro.

Li e adorei. Estou bastante impressionado, pois trata-se do primeiro romance do autor e consegue provar que é capaz de muito mais!

Aconselho a todos. Vale mesmo a pena ler, é impressionante e mais do que cativante.

Só tenho a apontar um único ponto negativo... E é o que me faz não dar cinco estrelas ao livro.
De facto, o nível de complexidade das personagens é impressionante, e de um livro que nem parecia tão espectacular quanto isso surgiu uma obra fascinante. Meia estrela.
Porém, uma coisa é certa: no plano geral, este é apenas mais um thriller.

Embora seja único em si, numa vista geral, inserido na Literatura, este é apenas mais um thriller, que não acrescenta muito mais para além de uma história desenvolvida diferente. Por isso mesmo, faltou essa especialidade, essa característica que o teria feito único realmente, para ser uma obra-prima. Está quase! Volto a dizer, está mais do que recomendado, é um livro a ler de certeza!

Maria Helena e Arpad logo depois de casados fazem uma longa viagem e vão à Hungria e à Transilvânia. A artista se encanta com a paisagem, a arquitetura e com os espaços livres. Volta para Paris, retoma seus estudos e com o marido participa das reuniões de um grupo conhecido como "Os Amigos do Mundo", quando debatem idéias, divagam, falam de arte, de suas vidas, de política.

A pintora abraça a arte abstrata, que não mais abandonará. "Mais do que o que se vê, é como se vê". O casal trabalha sem parar.

Vai a Portugal por um tempo, ela está doente, precisa repousar, o clima de sua terra natal e a companhia de sua mãe, são uma bênção. Mas volta a Paris, lá está o mundo artístico que alimenta a alma do casal.

Hitler, no entanto, não está preocupado com as Artes. Seus propósitos são outros: invade a Polônia. Maria Helena e Arpad logo se dão conta que devem voltar para Portugal. Eles talvez não tenham se apercebido que a balança de Salazar pendia mais para o lado dos nazistas que para o lado dos aliados. Como ao casar com um húngaro abrira mão da cidadania portuguesa – tristes tempos – ela requer um passaporte de cidadã natural de Portugal. Mas o governo português recusa: casada com um húngaro? Com certeza um comunista? Não e não.

Até um quadro que pintara, sob encomenda, para a exposição O Mundo Português, é recusado. O casal resolve que o melhor é partir para longe.

E vêm para o Rio de Janeiro. Aqui, para se sustentar, ele dá aulas de pintura e pinta retratos, sob encomenda. Ela pinta azulejos e porcelana. Fazem amigos, dentre eles Murilo Mendes e Cecília Meirelles.

As notícias da Europa são assustadoras, terríveis. Aqui no Rio Maria Helena pinta um de seus mais conceituados quadros, A Partida de Xadrez, óleo sobre tela e traços de carvão, 81x100cm.

The movie fan's chess board

Being a huge fan of the Alien series, I especially love this chess board. With some interesting characters, this will surely be fun for the movie fans. It's the robots versus the aliens. Sota Toys has come up with chess boards inspired by James Cameroon's hit film Alien. Although the rules are still the same, the Aliens Chess Set makes it even more interesting by inserting the element of survival into the game. You simply need to beat the aliens to save the Earth.

The hollow chess board also acts as a storage to keep the pieces safe. The chess board is made of resin while the pieces are made of solid pewter metal. The set is available with pieces either painted or polished. The bad news is that the board was made in a limited edition and it's no longer available.
